Bird Watching

Newton Abbot is ideally situated to give the dedicated or the occasional bird watcher access to the  Devon coast line with  its large estuaries, dunes, mudflats and wetlands it is a real paradise for bird watchers.

The Exe Estuary at Dawlish Warren has an international reputation with several environmental protections.  It is qualified  as an RAMSAR site  and a SSSI site.  It’s a great spot to see brent geese, eider, grebes, skuas and dunlin.  Between September and March  thousands of wading birds can be seen before they leave on their journey North.

The inlets on the estuary provide feeding grounds for the little egret and curlew.  Other bird spotting sites include the reed beds at South Milton Ley, Beesands and West Charleton March.

Newton Abbot is within very easy reach of Dartmoor, which provides another great area for bird watching.  Among the birds to see are wood warblers, pied flycatchers, redstarts and buzzards.
