Description:
Recent evidence suggests that the lip-smacking combination of scones, jam and clotted cream known as `The Cream Tea’ was created by the Monks of Tavistock's Benedictine Abbey.

After Tavistock Abbey was brutally damaged by marauding Vikings around 997 Ordgar the Earl of Devon arranged to have the Abbey rebuilt.  He was helped by local workers and in turn they were rewarded for their hard work by being fed homemade breads which were topped with clotted cream and strawberry preserves by the monks.

The cream teas proved so popular, that the monks continued to serve them to passing travellers. At some point scones replaced the bread and from then on the recipe became a regional speciality
