Horse Riding
The countryside around Newton Abbot is wonderful for riding. From Dartmoor to quiet bridleways riding is a great way to enjoy the scenery. There are a number of riding schools around Newton Abbot.
Oakford Farm Riding Centre at Ideford just outside Newton Abbot offers BHS qualified staff and is BHS approved. There is also a Saturday Club. Shilstone Rock Riding Centre between Bovey Tracey and Widecombe is the place for those half or full day treks across Dartmoor. Hard hats and basic tuition are provided. There are 3 hunts within reach of Newton Abbot. South Devon Hunt, Axe Vale Harriers and Spooners and West Dartmoor. The hunt point to points provide a great day out for racing enthusiasts. For those with their own horses Haldon Forest offers a great place to ride away from roads and traffic. Hardcombe Riding Trials are dedicated to horse riders and offer 10 miles of beautiful rides. Dogs are welcome provided they are under control at all times. Riders are asked not to use the car parks but instead use the dedicated Harcombe Horsebox Park in Haldon Forest. This park is solely for horse boxes and is free of charge. Carriage Driving If you want a new way to tour the countryside but don’t fancy being on the horse’s back why not learn to drive. Dartmoor Driving at Holne approx 20-30 mins drive from Newton Abbot offer qualified tuition at all levels and will teach you to drive a single pony up to six-in-hand.
