ALLER BROOK

Although wedged between the A380 and the industrial estate Aller Brook provides an attractive walk where you will see all sorts of wildlife, kingfishers, rabbits voles, kestrels, and even otters. From Aller Brook you can follow the Templer way up stream to Jetty Marsh, or if it is low tide down stream beside the estuary.

This walk starts just up from Penn Inn. Take the path adjacent to the Penn Inn Public House, walk through the gateway with the brook on your right.

As you start this walk you will skirt the edge of Forde House and the council offices of Teignbridge District Council.  If you wish you can take a short detour and see what was once a magnificent house and estate , you can walk in front of Forde House , taking in what was once a vast estate and family home which entertained notable people from our past, go around the back of the house and turn right which will take you in front of new council offices and pick up the Aller Brook path again.

Continue along the path and past the footbridge which spans over the A380,

The grassy areas around the Aller Brook are full of flowers and seeds in spring, summe rand autumn, which makes good habitat for voles and mice.
If you ignore the industrial estate to your left you can imagine what this area was like some forty years ago, the brook meanders through the salt marsh, a perfect habitat for Herons, Redshank and Curlew, and before that you may have seen the barges full of clay drifting down the Teign to Teignmouth.

Sometimes otters fish the Aller Brook, if the tide is low you may be lucky to find their foot prints in the mud, a full size male otter is almost as big as a spaniel.

Follow the footpath until it reaches the Teign Esturay, you can cross the brook here and return back to Penn Inn down the other side, or perhaps take the tidal path along the estuary, or take the path along the Templer Way.
