Description:
NEW FOR 2010

The museum is very excited to announce that the clay company Sibelco, has loaned the ‘Kingsteignton Idol’ (a prehistoric wooden figure discovered by clay workers in 1867) to the museum. It has previously been  displayed at RAMM, Exeter Museum, which will re-open in 2011.  It will be the first time that the idol has been displayed in Newton Abbot.
A rare, bronze- age spear head, found near the ‘Idol’ at the same time, has been kindly loaned by John Pike, from The Ball Clay History Society.  These two ancient exhibits will enable visitors to understand the ancient history of the town and its environs.  The 2010 exhibition will contain, extracts from the archival film collection, as well as sound bites from the museums extensive oral archive collection, together with many photographic images and tales that will bring back memories for some, and excite others.

Last year’s, very successful John Lethbridge exhibition, will be available for a re-visit, or be a chance for the public to visit if they missed it in 2009.  The full-sized replica of John Lethbridge’s, (18th century diver and inventor) diving- machine awaits them!

Atmospheric Carriage Model
The museum has a model of an atmospheric carriage of the South Devon Railway.  This was commissoned as part of the Brunel 200 celebrations.  It was built by the local model engineer Peter Parks based on the drawings from The Broad Gauge Society.
To complement the model The South Devon Model Railway Society have created a representation of "Newton Station" c. 1848. created using the watercolours of the area by William Dawson.  These watercolours are held in the Institution of Civil Engineers, London. The watercolours have been copied by the Devon Record Office, Exeter.

Signal Box
Taking pride of place within the GWR Room, stands the working signal box which provides visitors with a hands-on connection with the great days of the Great Western Railway.  Also within the GWR Room there is an audio system where you can hear ex-GWR men talk about their life on the railways.
Following the very successful exhibition in 2009, of the 250th anniversary of the extraordinary life of Newtonian, John Lethbridge. It has been decided to keep the exhibition for 2010, with a few exciting additions, for those that feel they have seen it all - there is more to see!
