What are Twin Towns?

Town-Twinning was developed in Europe after the Second World War.  It was set up as a way to bring European people into a closer understanding of each other and to promote cross-border projects of mutual benefit. The idea is to twin towns and cities with similar demographic make-up in different countries.

Newton Abbot's Twin Towns: Besigheim (Germany) & Ay-Champagne (France)

Besigheim

The Historic Town of Besigheim is situated 13km (8 miles) north of Ludwigsburg in South Germany.  It has a population of approximately 12,000.

Besigheim was founded in the 12th century as a well defended walled city. and was first mentioned in 1153 in official documentation.  In 1693 Besigheim's fortifications were all but destroyed by french troops, and by 1750 they were destroyed further leaving little remains.

Besigheim has an abundance of old buildings including a town hall that dates back to 1459, a medieval tower, gothic church from 1502 and a cobblestone market place.
